What a slow site costs you
Somebody searching on a phone has three or four results open. The one that appears first is the one they read, and the rest get closed before they finish loading.

What we do about it
Speed is a build decision rather than a setting. It comes from sending less code, sizing images for the screen they land on, and getting the important part of the page on screen before anything else loads.
Images are sized and served for the device asking for them, and the page ships only the code it uses rather than a library it never calls. The main content comes on screen first and everything else follows behind it.
Hosting and caching are set up so a returning visitor waits for almost nothing. Then it is measured again afterwards, so the improvement is a number rather than a claim.

Before you ask
Is the website speed test free?
Yes, and there is no email to hand over. Put in your address, wait about half a minute, and the result appears on the page.
What does the score actually mean?
It is Google's own performance score out of 100, measured on a mobile connection. Above 90 is fast, 50 to 89 is middling, and below 50 is slow enough that people notice it while they wait.
Why does it test on a phone?
Because that is where local searching happens, and a phone on mobile data is the hardest case. A site that is quick there is quick everywhere.
Does site speed affect my Google ranking?
Google uses page experience, including how quickly the main content appears and whether the page moves about while it loads, as part of how it ranks pages. It publishes the thresholds it measures against.
My score is low. What now?
